Stage 02 · Forming

Cold Heading & Cold Forging Shop

Bolt heads, flanges and shapes are formed cold for strong, consistent parts.

Department 03 of 14

Cold heading forms the head and shape of a fastener from wire at room temperature. Instead of cutting material away, the steel is pressed into shape, keeping its grain flow intact and producing parts quickly and consistently.

What happens here

  1. 01Wire is cut to a measured blank
  2. 02The blank is pressed through forming dies
  3. 03Heads, flanges and shoulders take shape
  4. 04Formed blanks move on to trimming and threading

Why it matters

  • 01

    Strong parts

Forming keeps the grain flow of the steel continuous through the head.

  • 02

    Low material waste

Material is reshaped rather than machined away.

  • 03

    Repeatable volume

Well-suited to producing large quantities of identical parts.
